Russian designer kicked out of fashion week

A Russian designer excluded from fashion week

Fashion week is a privileged moment for designers. It’s time to show world and work which has been done for months.

Valentin Yudashkin set aside

On the occasion of the last day the 8 March was scheduled Valentin Yudashkin’s virtual fashion show. A parade that has been deleted given the current context. Indeed, the Russian creator would not have dissociated from this war.

The decision of the president of the federation

He is the president of the federation of haute couture, Ralph Toledano, who announced this Sunday that he suppressed the parade of Yudashkin. At first glance, the Russian who has been parading for years at fashion week, would have been at the origin new Russian army uniforms.

Our team wanted to verify the position of Valentin Yudashkin. If he had expressed reservations about the war in Ukraine, it would have been hard to remove him. […] They wanted to do a job in all intellectual honesty to see if, like other artists, he dissociated himself. It was not the case. I told them you remove it immediately.

An intolerable situation for Mr. Toledano who hastened to withdraw the parade. Furthermore, Valentin Yudashkin was decorated by the Russian President in 2019. This information had not been forgotten by the federation of haute couture and fashion.

Fashion distances itself from Russia

The fashion industry wants to distance itself from Russia in its events.

Ulyana Sergeenko and Yanina Couture fashion houses

This is particularly the case with fashion houses like Ulyana Sergeenko and Yanina Couture. These two Russian houses will be the subject of a decision making as to their maintenance. This is the FHCM (haute couture and fashion federation) who will make this decision. The latter had already paraded in Paris.

Ralph Toledano’s response

On this subject the president of the federation issues a clear answer. He explains :

You can’t jump on everyone without having thought about it. We don’t attack people, we don’t throw people out without checking things out.

A committee will meet in June to find out if they should keep away from Russian houses.

The symbolic tribute of Demna Gvasalia

The week of fashion week, however, had a great revelation. The creator ofthe Balenciaga brand made his parade a reason for commitment and denunciation of the events current tragedies. He left T-shirts in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Its icy atmosphere with the snowstorm is a nice symbolism for the current context.

The 40-year-old spoke about why he kept the parade going. At the beginning and end of the parade, he recites ukrainian poetry by author Oleksandr Oles. This dates from 1917. Later he confided to the press:

I will not surrender without a fight.
