Caroline Garcia, who came to Japan with a smile and full of confidence, hoped to continue her good series. But she came up against, this time, a remarkable player, who fought like a lioness on each point of this 1/8th.
Despite a match point and 24 aces, a record for her, the Frenchwoman did not manage to conclude against an astonishing Shuhai Zhang. The score: 4/6 7/6 7/6, two tie breaks won seven points to five.
Qinwen Zheng, a talented young Chinese, also made the headlines by dismissing a Paula Badosa, TDS 1, dominated in all aspects of the game 6/3 6/2. A little later Garbine Muguruza logically beat the Greek Despina Papamichail 6/4 6/2.
Note also the success of Claire Liu (USA, 22 years old, WTA 84) 6/4 6/1 against Elise Mertens.
We also note the success of Liudmila Samsonova, always dangerous, against Elena Rybakina 6/2 6/4, this in the 1/16th final.

Qinwen Zheng 🇨🇳 vs. Claire Liu 🇺🇸: 6/4 7/5
Attention nugget! This 19-year-old Chinese, as we have already told you several times, has immense talent, size and above all a game to shine on all surfaces. No doubt she will continue to climb to the top.
Veronika Kudermetova 🇷🇺 vs. Beatriz Haddad Maia 🇧🇷: 6/7 7/6 6/1
The big match of these quarters is this one with more than three hours of tension and reversal of the situation between two players of a very similar level.
Several times on the edge of the precipice, the Russian showed incredible courage, especially to win the second set, at the end of the suspense. Then it is her rival who marks the blow physically.
Lyudmila Samsonova 🇷🇺 vs. Garbine Muguruza 🇪🇸: 6/4 6/2
No surprise between a confident girl, who hits hard and appreciates this type of surface and a player lacking benchmarks who really hasn’t achieved much since the spring.
Petra Martic 🇭🇷 vs. Shuhai Zhang 🇨🇳 : 5/7 2/6
The experienced Chinese, 33, 28th in the world, not easy to play, showed herself in her best light. In full confidence, delighted to play not very far from the country, she reached the last four for the 3rd time this year.
Saturday September 24, the 1/2 finals
Qinwen Zheng 🇨🇳 vs Veronika Kudermetova 🇷🇺: 5/7 6/3 7/6 (3)
Ranked 36th in the world, the great Chinese hopeful climbs, after three hours of play, in the final for the first time in her career.
Lyudmila Samsonova 🇷🇺 vs. Shuhai Zhang 🇨🇳: 7/6 6/2
What series ! Impressive for a few weeks now, the Russian has once again imposed herself on the circuit and continues to increase her statistics. She simply remains on 17 victories in her last 18 matches!
